Cross-Country

A professional mountain bike cross country race is on tap. Starting at the Sea Otter Bridge – UCI C3 racers will climb the “Corkscrew” and then travel the challenging trails and gravel roadways of the Fort Ord National Monument to finish at the Tire Bridge. Race distance is approximately 25 miles. Final course is pending BLM approval.

The professional mountain bike downhill is an individual race against the clock. The race course starts at the top of Laguna Seca Recreation Area – and follows the flowing contours of the hillside to a sprint finish at the bottom.

Dual Slalom hosted by Clif Bar

The 100% professional mountain bike dual slalom hosted by Clif Bar is a heads-up race against each other. The race course starts at the top of Laguna Seca Recreation Area swale – and uses the contour of the hillside to negotiate berms, rollers, and a rhythm section or two. The Saturday 4:00 pm Finals – where thousands will be on-hand to watch – feature the world’s fastest 32 men and 16 women.

The professional mountain bike Enduro is racing that combines descending skills and overall fitness. The Enduro starts at the top of Laguna Seca Recreation Area. Stage 1 uses the downhill course. Stages 2 and 3 feature Fort Ord National Monument trails with untimed transfers between all stages.

Field limit is 600 – no waitlist.

The Bulls eMTB Race ePowered by Bosch – is sanctioned by USA Cycling. The race starts and finishes at the Tire Bridge and the lap distance is approximately 2 miles. Racers will complete 60-80 minutes of racing.

Sea Otter Classic e-MTB Race Regulations:

We recognize e-bikes as human powered bicycles and encourage the operation of e-bikes in a manner that maintains the human powered bicycle characteristics in order to continue to enjoy and advocate access to public lands where allowed. The principles of design are to assist with the normal power and acceleration ranges of the human rider. E-bikes that are modified or designed to reach limits beyond normal human riding power outputs, high power output, and power assisted speeds greater than 20 mph or excessive acceleration assistance, are not allowed, nor welcomed, as they jeopardize access of the sport on public lands.

Classes:  We have (2) classes for racing

1. Age-Graded classamateur, participatory and fun

  • No prize money
  • All amateur categories, including novice categories are eligible.
  • All riders require a USA Cycling Membership with a Standard, Premium membership, or a one-day license/membership.
  • Men and Women Age Groups; 15-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+

 2. Open class – includes Pro and all categories, except Novice (formerly Category 5)

  • Competitive with prize money eligibility.
  • Total payout of $1,600 ($500, $200, $100 mens and womens).
  • All riders require a USA Cycling Memberships.

Equipment Regulations:

1. Age graded: E-bike with a Class 1 Label (and as follows)

  • Bikes must have Class 1 label, verified before the race at pre-check inspection tent
  • Only a single battery allowed (no spares)
  • A pedal assist bicycle only. No pedaling, no power assist.
  • Top speed with power assist is 20 mph and power assist stops if speed is above 20 mph
  • Maximum 750w output, no throttle allowed

2. Open: E-bike with a Class 1 Label (and as follows):

  • Bikes must be brought to the pre-check inspection tent, near start/finish, no later than 30 minutes prior to race time and will remain there until staging for the start.
  • Top (3) finishers or prize money spots, must report to the same tent immediately after their finish for post-race verification.
  • Only E-bikes with motors from the following verified manufacturers are allowed:
    • Bosch
    • Brose
    • Shimano
    • Yamaha
    • Fazua
    • *Manufacturers of other brands that can demonstrate compliance with these principles can petition for start recognition by submitting information prior to event day.
  • Equipment present in the inspection corral may be tested and possibly ridden to verify equipment
  • A pedal assist bicycle only. No pedaling, no power assist.
  • Top speed with power assist is 20 mph and power assist stops if speed is above 20 mph
  • Maximum 750w output, no throttle allowed

Sea Otter staff will conduct pre-race staging for all racing. Industry representatives will facilitate bike inspections for the Open Class. USAC Officials will not perform technical motor verifications, but may assist with label verification at the start line.

*Submission for petition to race from other manufacturers must be submitted before September 15th, 2020 to marla@emdesports.com and available onsite during event week for diagnostics to show compliance with the Class 1 characteristics, list of allowed manufacturers, and set of principles the other manufacturers are designing to.

Demo eMTBs may be available from BULLS and Bosch for use during the race.  When registering online for the race, you can request to be contacted by BULLS or Bosch for information regarding their demo program.

Gravel Race

NEW for 2020 – the professional gravel race is a wave start race. The professional road race starts at the Tire Bridge and finishes off-venue on Barloy Canyon Road. The road race uses Fort Ord National Monument paved roadways – where racers do multiple laps of a 7-mile loop. Race finish features a climb to the summit of Barloy Canyon Road.

Circuit Race

The professional circuit race utilizes the world renowned Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca, featuring an 11-turn, 2.4 mile with 108’ elevation change, closed circuit.
