Sound Off! Cyclists and Sponsors Remind Us Why the 2010 Sea Otter Classic Is a Must-Attend Event

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Monterey, CA (January 6th, 2010) — Three short months separate the competitors, exhibitors and fans from taking part in the 2010 Sea Otter Classic. Exhibitor and competitor registrations are filling in, camping is filling up, and the plans and possibilities are filling out for what is set to be the best event in its storied 20-year history. The 2010 Sea Otter Classic takes place April 15-18 on the Monterey Peninsula.

Racers Ready Their Bodies and Bikes

Cycling enthusiast Robert Abbott has been attending and participating in what was then called the Laguna Seca Challenge, now known as the Sea Otter Classic, since the first bike rolled across the racing tarmac back in 1991. Abbott still has a number of pieces of memorabilia from events past and is anxious to get back to the event this year.

"My son Justin and I are training hard for the 2010 Sea Otter event. I'm excited to see and participate in the 20th anniversary," Abbott said.

Participants in this year's event have a lot to look forward to, including the addition of both a Gran Fondo and Mountain Bike Tour. Not only will the racing and riding be exciting, the lakebed will be stirring with activity as well. Over 300 exhibitors displayed their wares at last year's event, and more are expected to attend this season.

Sponsors Prepare to Launch and Market

Sponsors play a major role in the promotion and execution of the Sea Otter event each year. Knowing that all of the major disciplines are represented in the crowd, many sponsors utilize this event as a way to launch new products. Thousands of spectators are expected to pass through the expo area of this year's event, and all of the major sponsors plan to take advantage of the opportunity to introduce and promote their many new product offerings.

"We continue to return to this event because it has all of our brands: road, mountain, everything. It's a virtual race trade show. This event represents us very well," said Michael Zellmann, PR and Media Manager, SRAM. (Click here for more from Zellmann on the Sea Otter Classic)

"It's a great opportunity for us to get in touch with the consumer and show them new products. It's a great opportunity to see what people are riding. There's not many events like this in the country," said Nic Simms, Global Marketing Manager, Specialized. (Click here for more from Simms on the Sea Otter Classic)

Local Clubs Look to Compete and Promote

Local clubs looking for a prime spot to pit and recruit new members can take advantage of a special offer to all bike clubs. Special discounts on race entry as well as festival passes are available to all clubs with six or more competing members. Not only will clubs be allowed to pit out of the expo area, they can also promote to potential new members by interacting with expo goers.

"We obviously come here to race, but it's so much more than the racing. It's the great expo area; it's the fun stuff for the kids. We're in it for everything. The racing is just an extra piece," said local club racer, Andy Leisner, Ghost Tree Racing. (Click here for more from Leisner on the Sea Otter Classic)
