Once, the Sea Otter Classic was a solid local race weekend where area riders would sign up for every race they could squeeze in during the course of the event. Families, fans, and racers of all types descended upon Laguna Seca to take on the challenge of early-season racing (back then Sea Otter was in March); kids' allowances got maxed out on race fees and satisfied parents – thankful for activities that didn't come out of a box or involve joysticks and computer screens – poured their weary children into backseats of cars for the drive home following the event.

Now in its 20th year, the Sea Otter Classic will distinguish itself from its humble beginnings in 1991 with an activities roster designed to keep in step with trends and engage everyone. In addition to a bursting schedule of competitive events and time-tested highlights like the SRAM Mountain Bike Ride Zone and shows featuring stunts and trials, new activities ranging from an all-girls mountain bike day camp, yoga with Ryan Leech, Ride With a Pro program, and a genuine Gran Fondo will answer to the vast range of participant interests. This year's event, which takes place April 15-18, marks Sea Otter's tireless efforts to offer activities to the growing spectrum of participants.

Each of the past several years, the Sea Otter Classic has substantially subtracted from its carbon footprint by ratcheting up efforts to make the event more sustainable. Incentives to reduce waste, preferred parking for carpoolers and hybrid or other alternative fuel vehicles, and a recycling program in a league of its own are the bedrock of Sea Otter's sustainable initiatives. Partnerships with companies that live by their sustainable words, like Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Clif Bar & Co., Pedro's, and Toyota, have strengthened and expanded Sea Otter's "green" mission and new this year, if you like beer, then you'll want to sample some brew at Sierra Nevada's Solar Draft Trailer.

Starting in 1991, the Sea Otter Classic laid the foundation to bring a celebration of cycling to mid-coastal California. Now in its twentieth year, Sea Otter continues to create the opportunity for competitors, fans, families, and industry influencers to forge and galvanize reputations in front of an international community of peers and leaders. Product debuts from Thule, SRAM and Specialized have become annual attractions while competitive events set the backdrop for racers to test themselves against some of the fastest cyclists in the world. But don't take our word, the following spokespeople are at your service to provide some perspective of the Sea Otter Classic. This year's Sea Otter Classic takes place April 15-18, 2010 at Laguna Seca Recreation Area in Monterey.

Three short months separate the competitors, exhibitors and fans from taking part in the 2010 Sea Otter Classic. Exhibitor and competitor registrations are filling in, camping is filling up, and the plans and possibilities are filling out for what is set to be the best event in its storied 20-year history. In an effort to help our nation's warriors recover from emotional and physical injuries sustained in battle, the Sea Otter Classic has partnered with the Wounded Warrior Project and the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. Donations are currently being accepted on the Sea Otter Classic website.

The Sea Otter Classic, Powered by SRAM, the nation's largest annual cycling festival, has retained Backbone Media to direct its social media outreach. Longtime cycling industry veteran Mike McCormack has joined the Backbone Media team and will manage the partnership with Sea Otter.

It's no wonder the Sea Otter Classic Powered by SRAM continues to be one of the most successful cycling events on the calendar. With a consistent focus on finding new and exciting opportunities to get athletes involved, Sea Otter has added two new elements for 2010: a Gran Fondo and collegiate cycling categories. Returning this year will be the Road Race, Circuit Race, and Criterium for the road cyclists. And, of course, the full gamut of mountain bike events including Downhill, Super D, Dual Slalom, Cross Country and Short Track.
