SOC Supports the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

The 20th Annual Sea Otter Classic will be held April 15-18, 2010 at the Laguna Seca Recreation Area, Monterey, Calif. The four-day "Celebration of Sport" is considered the world's largest cycling festival, hosting nearly 10,000 professional and amateur athletes and 50,000 fans.   This year the Sea Otter Classic will not only be hosting the best cyclists from around the globe they are also supporting the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.  The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund provides financial assistance and quality of life solutions for Marines, Sailors and other military personnel from the Army, Air Force and Coast Guard who served in support of Marine Forces, and were injured in post 9-11 combat or training, or diagnosed with life threatening illnesses, and their families. Our fund provides relief for immediate financial needs that arise during hospitalization and recovery as well as perpetuating needs such as home modifications, customized transportation and specialized equipment.

Established in May 2004, the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that has provided over 17,000 grants totaling over $36 million in assistance to our Nation's wounded and critically ill heroes and their families.   This year in support and honor of this commitment, 3 competitive cyclists from Team Semper Fi will join the Sea Otter Classic to test their cycling skills.  All three members come from Camp Lejeune, NC and have taken up cycling as a means of recovering from injuries received on the field of battle.    Under the watchful eye of their Team Mentor Gunnery Sergeant (ret) Brian C. Grenier, Gunnery Sergeant Dan Farwley and Sergeant Travis Bartlett will make the trip to represent Team Semper Fi and the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund in this year’s Sea Otter Classic.  Each Marine has over come debilitating injuries most common amongst service members returning from the War on Terror.   “This is a great honor to be able to come out to CA and be part of one of the Premier US Cycling events, we look forward to the challenge and helping spread the word about the great work that is being done on the home front by the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund” Said Grenier.
