Important Race Information for Athletes

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 20-22, 2012

Same course in 2012 as 2011, featuring classic Sea Otter singletrack for each of the race categories.

Pre-ride/course inspection is available on all courses beginning Wednesday, April 18 at noon.

Having your race number on your bike is required to pre-ride/inspect either of the courses.

Pre-ride/inspection times are as follows:

All Categories – Wednesday, noon – 6 p.m.

All Categories – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

CAT 2 (intemediate) and CAT 3 (beginner) Category – Friday, 8 a.m. – noon

CAT 2 (intemediate) and CAT 3 (beginner) Category – Saturday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. (Some sections will be closed due to the UCI Pro XC races.)

  • CAT 3 (beginner) course:  All age categories and both men and women. The race finish is near the Dual Slalom. Check out the map, turn-by-turn directions. 16.1-mile course. See the maps and profiles below.
  • CAT 1 (expert) and CAT 2 (intermediate) course:  This is a very challenging course. It combines all the components of a great ride—lots of singletrack, ample passing on the doubletrack/fire roads, and close to 3500' of climbing (per lap). The Sport/Expert cross country course includes a long singletrack climb up the famous "Goat" Trail—TR 41. The first few miles of the course are fire road/double track—Lookout Ridge Road—but include the "Wall.” This may become a hike-a-bike pending trail conditions, transitioning into the descent down TR49, a fun, fast, flowing tight singletrack section. We are using the famous "Ewok" Trail  –TR 43—climbing up to Three Sisters Road. Finally, one of the newer trails in the Fort Ord Trail system is in this course: TR36. This singletrack trail is a ton of fun—a twisty, tight descending trail through the eucalyptus trees. All racers will finish near the Dual Slalom. Check out the map, turn-by-turn directions. Remember: CAT 1 (expert) racers (except 50 and older men, and all women) will complete two laps of the course for a total of 39.8 miles. CAT 1 (expert) men 50 years and older, CAT 1 (expert) women, and all CAT 2 (intermediate) racers complete one lap of the course for a total of 19.9 miles.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) welcomes you to Fort Ord and the Monterey Peninsula. When training for competitive events, please share the trail and yield to other users.

As the premier conservation agency in the United States, the BLM sustains the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The BLM asks that you tread lightly on the land when you train for and compete in the Sea Otter Classic.

To preserve these trails at Fort Ord for future riders, please:

  • ride only on marked trails;
  • do not ride or brake on open terrain;
  • do not cut across switchbacks; and
  • do not use trails when they are wet or muddy.
