Athletes Corner: Garmin Edge
Wednesday, January 16, 2008

If you’re gearing up for the season and want the latest in bike computer technology, you need to get your hands on a Garmin Edge®. The new 605 and 705 have all the features of our previous GPS-enabled bike computers — time, distance, wireless speed/cadence, elevation, heart rate and tons of training/timer features. But the biggest news on these models is mapping. Now you can lose yourself in your ride without losing your way. The 605 and 705 have built-in basemaps with road and street detail. The map detail really pops on the unit’s color screen, which is slightly larger than the existing Edge 205/305 display. For topo maps or detailed street maps with address lookup and points of interest, you can purchase optional SD cards with preloaded maps.
You can configure the Edge map page to show 1-4 data fields at the top of the screen or full-screen map. The addition of a small click stick makes it easy to change settings or pan the map page. Need to mark a location on the map? Just pan to it, push the click stick and save it or select “go to” for instant navigation. Edge 605 and 705 give you the option of following roads or going off-road when navigating. When navigating to a destination, Edge highlights your route on the map and alerts you to upcoming turns with on-screen directions, turn arrow and an audible beep. Like the previous models, they feature high-sensitivity receivers for exceptional GPS reception, even in heavy tree cover and canyons.
Good luck with your winter training and stay tuned next month to find out more about the wireless technology we’ve cooked into these new Edge models.
